Saint John, New Brunswick
Monday 10th October
We’re back again, this is the 2nd time on this trip. Another good day with the weather and today is Canadian Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for this year.
We have a cruise ship excursion booked for today, it’s a Trolley tour around town and to see the reversing rapids. It was interesting, again the driver/guide Bonnie made the tour. Due to the time of visiting the reversing rapids there wasn’t a lot to see and the paper mill across the river kind of puts a blot on the landscape. It detracts from the beauty of the area.
Bonnie pointed out places of interest explaining that there is a Pedway system in Saint John linking key places underground or in covered bridges so you can easily walk the town in the coldest of weathers.
We passed The Three Sisters Lamp it is in direct line with the steeple of Trinity Church, so that sea captains were able to navigate their way safely into Saint John Harbour at night. Three red gas lamps, visible from three miles. If the three red lamps appeared individually, sailors would know they were heading straight into the harbour, however if only one or two could be seen, sailors knew they needed to alter their course.
Another unusual fact about Saint John is if you use a taxi you don’t have sole use, the driver can pick up and drop off others during your ride! Not sure how the billing would work for that.
After our tour we shopped in the container park and bought several local delicacies, namely maple syrup, chocolate and biscuits.
