Bar Harbor, Maine
Sunday 9th October
This has got to be one of our favourite ports of calls. We timed it just right with the leaves, the weather was fantastic, Gary the tour guide and driver was outstanding, everything came together to make a perfect day.
Another tender port and as we had self booked a tour over the internet with a local company we decided to go for another early ship departure to make sure we were on time.
We were off early having had a light breakfast in the room but no hot drink to start the day so we made our way to a coffee shop along the street and sat in the sun on this crisp morning with our first coffees of the day. We checked in for our tour and got our boarding passes, had a quick look up the Main Street and into the park for some photos.
We had booked Ollies Trollies online for a 2.5hr trip in Acadia National park including a trip up Cadillac mountain at a cost of $53 each. There is a free bus that runs from town to the park however it isn’t a tour and doesn’t go up the mountain and I think you will need to buy an individual entry ticket to the park.
Our tour was excellent, Gary did a great job and was such a friendly guy, stopping at photo opportunities and pointing out places. The scenery and leaves were just beautiful which brought on another emotional moment for me. I have always wanted to see New England and I was appreciating the moment and realising a dream. We loved it and this confirmed that we needed to do a New England road trip in the future. On our tour into Acadia National Park for stopped for a comfort break at The Jordan Park House Restaurant which is one of two places in Bar Harbor that sell the famous popovers. These are similar to a Yorkshire pudding and are served with Jam. At this restaurant there is no takeaway only a sit down service which we didn’t have time to do.
After the tour, we had a walk round town and bought a few bits in the shops then we headed off for food at a place recommended by Gary called Stewards.. We sat outside on the dock and enjoyed clam chowder and some fritters followed by blueberry pie and ice cream as Bar Harbor is famous for its blueberries. We didn’t know that. We did sample a couple of local adult beverages before making our way to the tender to return to the ship.
