Day 4, Blue Lagoon

Our first stop today was The blue lagoon that we had booked some weeks before. It’s about a 40 minute drive from Reykjavik so if you haven’t got a car you need a bus transfer. At the time we were there the ones we looked up were about £40 per person return.

As we drove through the lava fields we could see steam in the distance, very interesting landscape.

We didn’t really know what to expect at the Blue Lagoon although we had received a instructional video the day before. Our time slot for arrival was 9am-10am. It was already busy, the staff checking us in were very efficient and we were soon in the changing rooms which were like you would expect in an expensive spa. Very impressive. We had a lovely couple of hours chilling in the lagoon, enjoying our included drink and complimentary face mask. One Man was laughing at Paul saying he looked like someone from phantom of the Opera as his had dried white all over his face and the top of his bald head😂😂. The weather was gorgeous so it didn’t make it cold getting out of the pools. A pleasant time was had by both of us and whilst expensive £150 for both of us we felt it was worth the money.

After our visit to the Blue Lagoon we drove down to the coast to Grindavik through the lava fields. We saw all the temporary car parks that have been quickly established for the hikers to go on the trek to see the erupting volcano. There is a lot of work going on around these car parks to make the path more suitable for people to walk on. The landscape is very much lava fields and not a lot else in this area

We drove onto Porláshöfn a little harbour town with plenty of new residential properties being built. It’s the only harbour on the southern coastline between Grindavik and Höfn. Ferries to various places run from here. We stopped in a little cafe bar that we came across for lunch, considering it’s a town in the middle of nowhere and the cafe wasn’t on the main road this was the most expensive place for coffee and lunch. Cafe Bristól, 2 bowls of soup at £13.93 each, wow.

After a freshen up at the hotel, we went back to the Mathöll Hlemmur for food and drinks as we enjoyed it so much last time.
