Day 5, Reykjavik
Our last day in Iceland, our flight was early the next day.
After breakfast we started off with a drive along the sea front towards the old harbour area, we found ourselves at the far end of Reykjavik on a headland where there was a nature reserve and golf course. Very natural area on the edge of the city. We spent some time watching the ducks and watching the locals enjoying the good weather.
From there we drove to Perlan Museum high above Reykjavik. An interesting place, the views over the city are fabulous, at one side you look down over the domestic airport of Reykjavik. I found this fascinating as the information boards explained that this airport was built by the British in World War II to use as a stop over in the journey from Canada and USA to Britain when moving military and aircraft. From March 1941 it was known as RAF Reykjavik until it was handed over to Icelandic government in July 1946.
We then moved into the old town of Reykjavik for a mooch around and lunch. The buildings are a mix of old and new the place where we had lunch had a beautiful roof, a Viking ship sitting on it. We had a lovely lunch sitting outside in the sun and then on our walk back we stumbled across another statue of a cow/bull which I just had to get a photo with for my cow album 😂
After coffee on the balcony it was back out for our tea, we thought we were going into a posh restaurant however whilst it was upmarket the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant was called Jorgensen. I had ribs which I really enjoyed.
It was an early bed time as an early start the next day for our flight home. We got up at 3.30am for the 45 min drive back to the airport, the journey was difficult as it was thick fog, we made it safely, returning the car and getting to the airport on time. Good flight back.
