Day 3 The Waterfalls
Up and out again after a lovely breakfast to drive the other side of the golden circle and to see 2 famous waterfalls.
The first waterfall we went to was Seljalndsfoss, we weren’t on our own 😂 this is the only place that we had to pay to park. At £4.29, we thought is was reasonable. A few little shops, some toilet facilities and a refreshment place meant that you had everything you needed at this place. Very popular with the motor home community and independent travellers. We didn’t see any motor coaches at this stop. We walked up to the falls, it drops 60m with its origin from the volcano glacier Eyjafallajöll via the Seljalands river. It is possible to walk behind these falls, Paul started to do it however the path wasn’t good and people were slipping and coming out drenched so in the end he got the photos he wanted from the side and decided to give the walk behind a miss. It was a beautiful sight from the front and a great people watching position for people trying to take photos in front of the falls or scramble behind it.
Further on we went up the road another 30 mins or so to our 2nd waterfall. On the way we passed a property with a fence out front that had loads of ladies bra’s attached to it. Not sure what it was all about but it was an interesting sight on a country road where you are surrounded by sheep and wild horses and not much else.
On arrival at Skogafoss, we parked up with everyone else which I find fascinating as we hardly saw a lot of traffic so not sure where all these cars came from as you are in the middle of nowhere and miles and miles from any towns.
At the site, there is a campsite and a hotel with bistro. We walked over to the falls, this waterfall again is 60m high, you can scale the path at the side to a viewing platform at the top. We had already watched several you tube videos where they were saying the best view is definitely at the bottom so we didn’t bother attempting it. The river below the falls holds a large salmon and char population. I sat on a bench at the side to people watch and had a great view. We noticed some people posing infront of the falls in bikinis (it wasn’t that warm) so presuming from the positions they were posing in it was either a photo shoot or for their instagram page. We also saw a bride arrive to have photos taken. Apparently you can often see a rainbow over these falls and we were lucky, we saw one.
After our viewing and photo taking time we headed over to the bistro for some sustenance in the form of soup, bread and coffees.
We left there around 3pm and decided to travel a bit cross country to another waterfall on our list which is not as famous and off the beaten track so whilst we had time we decided to go. Whilst this waterfall was not as impressive Apple maps took us down some very small lanes however very well paved but windy. It was a lovely drive and the scenery was interesting. So definitely worth the detour and drive
The last waterfall of the day was completely different it was wide and not that tall plus when we arrived there was only one other car there which left soon after. This was Thorufoss falls .
