Honningsvag, North Cape, Norway
Port day 5 Europe’s most northern city (certainly not a city as we know it) 71° North
The day started off freezing 6C, we had breakfast on the balcony wrapped in blankets however by midnight we felt we were on the balcony of a ship in the Caribbean, it was lovely and warm.. Shorts and sunglasses were required 😂 at one point we needed sunglasses in bed, as it’s daylight 24hrs a day this far north. and very bright reflecting off the ocean.
Interesting city, it seems life revolves around fishing and being the gateway for tourists to go to the North Cape. We had a walk round the city (village size), looked at the buildings that varied in style. A few small cafes, plenty of gallery type places where we picked up a small piece of colourful art and bought a coffee table book about the area. Saw a creative piece of street art made from flip flops, right up my street, I love things like this.
The fish caught by the local fishermen hang under the rafters of the buildings presumably to dry out, interestingly it didn’t have an over powering smell of fish
There was a small market taking place by the harbour, up on the top road the locals were setting up a football pitch in the street for an event for the local kids so plenty of activity in this small place.
Trolls were a common sight in the shops, Troll figures, teatowels, T-shirts anything you want with a Troll on.
Back to the ship for a Baileys hot chocolate to warm up. Later it was summer pants and top to go down to dinner it had warmed up that much.
Whilst this place enjoys the midnight sun during the summer they experience complete darkness from 9th December through to January 4th
